| The
Society for Participatory Well Being extends its services to the
poor sectors of the community, particularly women and children. Seventy-five
percent of its activities and programs is geared to totally illiterate
women and girls that have left their \schooling after 3 grade. Realising
the necessity of empowering various segments of the society (particularly
women,) in order that they could endeavour to meet their needs by
themselves or through the assistance of their fellow citizens. As
the name itself states the focus of the Society is on participation
for well being, which embraces in its terminology an integrated comprehensive,
all embracing approach to well being. The philosophy and conceptual
basis of our programme has been that no progress or development can
be achieved without the full and active participation of the beneficiaries
themselves. This process ultimately prepares them for undertaking
programmes and projects by themselves and learn to be self reliant.
To
translate this philosophy into action, it was decided to select
a community, preferably a rural one, and work with and through them
on projects and programmes, aimed at the community's well being,
in other words their development. Thus paving the way for their
participation, involvement and control (PIC) of their lives and
their circumstances. (PIC - terminology borrowed from the book "Institution
Building and Social Development" by Dr. Salma Omer, University
Press of America, Inc.) Such measures lead to empowerment of individuals,
and preparation for assuming greater leadership responsibilities.
Below we give a brief synopsis of our focus, strategy and the projected
outcome of our approach. / Following is a full understanding of
our work and programmes.
